Text content on your website
This new blog series will focus on five important elements that your website needs to be successful – text, images, video, stories and testimonials. Each month, we will focus on one of these elements and let you know why they’re important and provide on tips on how to use them well. This month, we’re starting with text.

On a basic level, text is important to your website because it tells users who you are, what you can offer and how they can contact you. This is the main purpose of a business website. However, not only does text tell users about you, but it also tells search engines about you which helps direct people to your website and land those all-important sales.

A good website should educate, describe and/or inform with its text so ensuring that yours does just this will create a concise and easy-to-navigate passage of text. Using headings and sub-headings helps users find what they’re looking for easier and helps search engines understand where to display your website. Breaking up larger chunks of text into smaller paragraphs can appear less daunting to the user as well.

One of the most important uses of text on your website is alt text. This where descriptive text is added to images and helps improve your website in many ways. If an image fails to load, the alt text tells the user what the image was supposed to be, so they don’t miss out on the information altogether. It helps search engines better understand what they can ‘see’ in the image and helps provide more accurate results whilst enhancing your SEO. Finally, and most importantly, it makes your website more accessible to those who are visually impaired. Alt text is read out by screen reading software to provide a description of the image to those who cannot see it.

All text on your website should be easy to read and visible. This means that the information you’d like to get across to the user is easy to find and, in a font, and colour which is easy to read but preferably still aligns with your branding. It can be easy to forget about the human user when you’re focused on enhancing SEO but what use is it if your website can be found but it isn’t nice to look at or easy to read? Remember, Google ranks better user experiences higher so always keep the human user in mind.
